One of my all-time favorite sayings is: "Comparison is the thief of joy." Although this was said by Theodore Roosevelt many decades ago, it has never been more relevant than in the current age of social media.

In the pursuit of health and fitness, it's easy to get caught up in the quest for a specific body type or appearance. In today's world of phones and computers, we see a lot of pictures and messages on social media. Some of these pictures might make us think we need to look a certain way to be happy. But it's important to know that many of these pictures are not real—they are changed to look perfect. Instead of worrying about looking a certain way, we should focus on being healthy and feeling good about ourselves. Let's learn how to set goals that make us strong and happy, without worrying about what we see online. True wellness goes beyond the numbers on a scale or the reflection in the mirror. In this blog post, we'll explore the importance of shifting our focus from "getting skinny" or attaining a certain body shape to prioritizing our overall fitness and well-being. Let's dive into how to set realistic fitness goals and embrace our bodies along the journey, fostering a positive relationship with exercise and self-image.

Below you'll find a guideline for approaching health, wellness, and fitness from a wholesome and body-positive place, as opposed to a place of self-loathing and comparison to the unrealistic beauty standards rampant online:

Embracing Wellness Goals Over Appearance:

Instead of fixating solely on achieving a particular body size or shape, it's crucial to set holistic fitness goals that prioritize health and well-being. Focus on improving strength, stamina, flexibility, and overall fitness levels rather than chasing an idealized body image. Celebrate progress in how you feel, move, and perform rather than how you look externally. Our bodies are highly adaptive, and when you shift your focus to how you feel and what you're body can do instead of how it looks, you'll be surprised at the end result.

Shifting Mindset Towards Health:

Shift your mindset towards health-centric goals rather than appearance-based ones. Instead of aiming to "get skinny," strive to nourish your body with nutritious foods, stay hydrated, get enough sleep, manage stress, and prioritize self-care. View exercise as a form of self-love and empowerment, enhancing your physical and mental well-being rather than punishing yourself for not meeting unrealistic beauty standards. Similarly, listen to your body and remember that "exercise" looks different for everybody. For some, it may mean scheduling a 1-hour gym session every day for heavy lifting. For others, it may mean carving out 15 minutes per day for deep breathing exercises and gentle mobility. Always remember to meet your body where you're at.

Finding Balance and Acceptance:

Recognize that bodies come in all shapes and sizes, and there's no one-size-fits-all approach to fitness. Embrace your unique body and focus on what it can do rather than how it looks. Practice self-compassion and acceptance, acknowledging that your worth is not determined by your appearance. Shift your focus from external validation to internal fulfillment, finding joy and satisfaction in your progress and achievements.

Avoiding Unhealthy Habits:

Be mindful of the potential pitfalls of pursuing appearance-driven goals, such as developing unhealthy eating habits, over-exercising, or experiencing negative body image. Listen to your body's cues, prioritize balance and moderation, and avoid comparing yourself to unrealistic standards portrayed in the media. Remember that true beauty radiates from within, reflecting confidence, vitality, and self-love.

Ultimately, prioritizing health and well-being over appearance is essential for fostering a positive and sustainable approach to fitness. Embrace your fitness journey as a path to self-discovery, growth, and empowerment, focusing on how you feel rather than how you look. By shifting your mindset towards holistic wellness and self-acceptance, you'll cultivate a healthier relationship with exercise, body image, and ultimately, yourself. Let's embark on this journey together, celebrating the beauty of diversity and embracing the unique strengths of our bodies.
